#Agriculture #PotatoBreeding #AgriculturalInnovation #RussianAgriculture #PotatoProcessing #CulinaryCulture #DomesticSeedProduction In the vast expanses of Russia's agricultural landscape, a shift is underway, as domestic potato breeding takes center stage against imported varieties. With only 9% of seeds originating from Russian breeders in 2023, Vice Premier Viktoria Abramchenko aims to bolster this figure to at least 50% by 2030. Despite the current disparity, advocates like Dubinina, CEO of "SeDeK-Domodedovo," champion the superior taste and resilience of homegrown varieties, emphasizing traits like texture and high yields. Such sentiments are echoed by Dr. Sergei Zhevor, Director of the Federal Potato Research Center, who asserts that Russian varieties often outshine their foreign counterparts. One such example is the "Vostorg" variety, poised to revolutionize the potato processing industry, as indicated by its adoption by Lipetsk-based company "ViFry." Dr. Zhevor also highlights ongoing efforts to develop early-maturing varieties like "Sprinter" and strains tailored for processing into dried potato puree. The drive for innovation extends beyond traditional breeding institutions, with companies like "Dary Malinovki" venturing into seed production to address the dearth of quality material in regions like Krasnodar. According to Vasily German, Chairman of the Board at "Dary Malinovki," Russian breeding has made significant strides in recent years, boasting...

Earlier in April, the area in the United States in moderate drought or worse fell below 50 percent for the first time since June 19, 2012, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. The area this applies to is the continental United States minus Alaska (contiguous United States). Heavy precipitation across the Plains and the upper Midwest continued to ease drought. The area of the lower 48 states in moderate drought or worse declined to 47.82 percent, from 50.82 percent a week ago. "We've been on a steady but slow recovery path from drought since the peak in September 2012,"said Mark Svoboda, University of Nebraska-Lincoln climatologist and a founding author of the monitor. "We've seen a much more active weather pattern lately across the midsection of the country, which has been eroding the intensity of drought as we head into spring. This is exactly what we needed." Svoboda, the head of the Monitoring Program area at the National Drought Mitigation Center based at UNL, cautioned that improvement is still needed before the hot, dry season sets in. Drought Monitor authors synthesize many drought indicators into a single map that identifies areas that are abnormally dry, in moderate drought, in severe drought,...

In a recently-filed lawsuit, Associated Wholesale Grocers claims that the United Potato Growers of America, United Potato state groups and many potato grower-shippers are illegally setting potato prices. AWG specifically mentions Albert Wada of Wada Farms, who traveled extensively in the mid-2000s to convince potato growers in other states to follow Idaho growers’ leads in establishing United Potato groups. Despite forming under the Capper-Volstead Act, which allows growers to meet and set goals to stabilize markets without fear of antitrust laws, the United Potato groups are operating outside the Act because growers have affiliations to marketing/processing/and other non-grower entities, according to the lawsuit, filed April 17 in Kansas City, Kan. The Kansas City, Kan.-based wholesaler filed suit against Wada, his Idaho companies, the Salt Lake City-based United Potato Growers of America and 20 other potato companies, organizations and individuals. The case is in U.S. District Court in Kansas.

The Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development, Neiker-Tecnalia, has created four new potato clones which are characterised by their high antioxidant content, their good production both in size and number of tubers, as well as by their resistance to the usual diseases of this crop. The clones were obtained by natural methods through crossing varieties from South America with commercial varieties used in Europe. The result was three clones of the purple-fleshed potato and one with a markedly yellow flesh. The attractiveness and nutritional value of these types of potato make them a product highly regarded by professionals in gastronomy and by the public in general. The work of creating the clones is part of the Potato Genetic Enhancement Programme drawn up by Neiker-Tecnalia. The research was led by agricultural engineer Ms Raquel López, being the basis for her PhD thesis, and was presented at the University of the Basque Country. The aim of this specialist was to find potatoes which brought together the features of the South American varieties (their colour, resistance to pathogens and their nutritional and organoleptic properties) with those of the commercial varieties employed in our latitudes and characterized by their high productivity. The Neiker-Tecnalia...

#Agriculture #PotatoIndustry #SeedBreeding #AgriculturalDevelopment #RussianAgriculture #Farming #AgriculturalScience #CropProduction #AgriculturalInnovation In the late 1990s, as fast-food chains offering French fries proliferated across Russia, the domestic potato seed industry faced a crisis. Irina Dubinina, CEO of the Scientific-Production Enterprise "SeDeK-Domodedovo" and member of the National Union of Breeders and Seed Producers, recalls the era as a time of neglect for Russian breeding and seed production. "Essentially, in the late '90s, breeding and seed production were at a standstill. While collections were maintained, practical scaling was almost nonexistent. Seed production became irrelevant. Seed potatoes were imported in large volumes from the Netherlands, Germany, and France," she stated. Now, in 2024, SeDeK-Domodedovo commemorates 36 years of dedicated work in seed breeding and selection in Russia. It stands as one of the early adopters to engage in federal scientific programs aimed at advancing agricultural development, particularly in potato breeding, receiving government support. The lessons from the setbacks of the 1990s underscore the importance of investing in domestic seed breeding and production. Through proactive engagement in scientific programs and leveraging governmental support, companies like SeDeK-Domodedovo demonstrate the potential for revitalizing the Russian potato seed industry, ensuring its resilience and sustainability for the future. #Agriculture #PotatoCultivation #AgrotechExhibition #RussianSelection #RetailNetworks #DomesticVarieties #SustainableAgriculture The recent "Potato and Vegetable Agrotech" exhibition at Moscow's Crocus Expo not only celebrated the diversity of Russian potato varieties but also shed light on a promising trend: the increasing interest of retail networks in stocking domestic potato cultivars. During the event, discussions and seminars organized by institutions like the Federal Center for Agroanalytics and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Moscow Region highlighted the achievements and future prospects of Russian potato breeding. One of the focal points of attention was the panel discussion titled "Development of Russian Selection: Achievements, Challenges, Collaboration Opportunities," which delved into the prospects of integrating Russian potato varieties into mainstream retail networks. Participants discussed the challenges and opportunities associated with this endeavor, exploring avenues for collaboration between industry stakeholders and government bodies to facilitate the widespread adoption of domestic potato cultivars. According to recent data, the demand for locally sourced produce is on the rise, driven by consumer preferences for freshness, quality, and supporting domestic agriculture. This trend presents a significant opportunity for Russian potato growers to expand their market presence and compete with imported varieties. Moreover, the versatility and adaptability of Russian potato cultivars make them well-suited...

Dieffenbach's Potato Chips - a kettle chips manufacturer in Pennsylvania producing for the local market - couldn't produce more of its product without expanding its facility. And that's exactly what the Dieffenbach family decided to do. On Saturday, the company's kettle chips began churning out from the 10,000-square-foot addition off Host Road, said Dwight Zimmerman, vice president of sales. "As a company, it will allow us to continue to grow,"said Nevin Dieffenbach, president. "Right now, running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, we don't have a lot of capacity left. To continue to grow, we needed to add on to our plant. As our customers continue to sell potato chips, we need to be able to produce more." The new facility, which is attached to the old and cost about $2.6 million, more than doubles the chip maker's capacity for production. Zimmerman, brother-in-law to Dieffenbach, said the company operated two kettles and now operates five. "Right now, we are working 24/7 and we are looking forward to this,"Zimmerman said. Dieffenbach's father, Elam, the second-generation owner, said the company will probably need additional employees, but it is not hiring yet. It employs about 50. Dieffenbach added that the new...
