The buffer basins that were their last irrigation source have nearly emptied: the basin at Vlamertinge has closed after levels dropped below the intake point, with entry barriers in place and fines of up to €350 for anyone pumping illegally. The provincial basin at Poperinge is shutting down, and the reservoir at Langemark has been too low since 17 July. Rivers and watercourses have been off-limits for weeks because of the drought, which leaves nothing else. The consequences are already visible: this year’s potato harvest is projected to fall far short of demand, a heavy blow to local agriculture. Dirk Sioen, a vegetable farmer and water official in Zonnebeke, calls the situation dramatic. The episode points to the region’s vulnerability to water scarcity and the case for long-term storage and conservation.
